Just dirt. In some ways this is really nice -- automatic digging hole for the kids, that's even fine in bad weather! We had to jack hammer the basement floor (poured concrete of various depths, mainly thin) and re-pour. We had footings but had to replace some of the block wall it was so bad. It has been a lot of work and you should be glad you are young as you are starting it. I love this kind of thing!
